Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter
A Review by Nick Peron
Time for me to review some home-town content, and if there is a movie that's gained a air of notoriety in my area it would be Odessa Film' Works most popular film " Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter", and it's a good film to start with if any. Some of you might be familiar with this film, or perhaps another Odessa short film called Harry Knuckles which was featured on one of Troma's Tromadance film selection DVD's.
Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter is the creation of director Lee Demarbe and writer Ian Driscoll, it stars Phil Caracas who is featured in all of Odessa's other film features (notably the Harry Knuckles series.)
In the film, a group of vampires are kidnapping the cities lesbians and having their skin being grafted onto them so that they can walk in the sun.
The vampires reign of terror prompts the church to seek out the one man that can stop the vampires from killing more victims: Jesus Christ.
Back from the dead, with a new hip look, Jesus teams up with Mexican wrestler El Santo top stop the vampire menace.
This movie has cheesey special effects, kung-fu fighting, musical numbers, social commentary, and nods to vampire lore and other independent films (Check out the scene where all the atheist goons are coming out of a vehicle that couldn't possibly hold them all... seems reminiscent of a certain movie about a certain hideously deformed creature of superhuman size and strength...)
Even though it's effectively like a Harry Knuckles movie with Jesus in the place of Harry Knuckles, it doesn't detract from the fact it's an entertaining movie. Phil Caracas puts on a great performance, and it's a hilarious little movie.
It's totally worth checking out if you like cheesey movies.
Watching This Movie Is Like:
Going to church and finding that (by surprise) the boring sermon that was scheduled for that day has been preempted indefinitely due to an ongoing kung-fu fight of apocalyptic proportions.
