Pep Squad

A Review by Nick Peron

Before I begin the review, I'd like to turn the readers attention the back of the video box. If you don't have it in hand, I'll fill you in on one paragraph on the back that really stood out for me:

"...in this hilarious dark comedy that pays homage to everything from fifties juvenile delinquent flicks, to Fellini, Warhol, Waters and Roger Corman. PEP SQUAD confronts the issues of teen violence and sexual abuse of students by educators while combining the best aspects of action-flick excitement, hip wit, darkly brilliant noir and a satirical tongue-in-cheek post modern view of what adolescence in Middle America is all about."

Now first of all, the fact that the creators of this film have big enough balls to compare themselves to Warhol and Roger Corman is a very bold statement. In fact if that's what he was trying to do, he fucking failed, and he looks like an even bigger moron for stating it on the back of his video box, because anyone who appreciates the work of Andy Warhol, Roger Corman, Fellini and the rest, know that this movie is a contrived bit of bullshit (wait until we get to the review, you'll see what I'm talking about.)

I think it's a bit conceited that he assumes that people are going to agree that he's paying homage to these great filmmakers. If you want people to associate your movie with somebody else's style, you wait for them to make that connection. You don't tell them that you think your movie is a homage to them. Because the only way they'll tie you in with Warhol's filmmaking would be in a phrase like "Remember that pompous dick head from Kansas that made that movie? God, Andy Warhol is rolling in his grave."

I think that when they say that Pep Squad "confronts" the issues of teen violence and sexual abuse, it more so "puts scenes of this nature in the movie and has a vague cultural critique about them." In fact, his attempts of putting these social statements into this film is like a Troma movie, if you added bleach to the script.

Anyway, you can see what road this review is going down, so let's get onto taking a closer look at the cast.

Jennifer Dreiling plays Beth, the girl who cannot convey a single emotion

What's worse than having a main character who cannot show a single emotion? A main character who always speaks at the same tone and diction no matter if the scene calls for her to be mad, sad, horny etc? When she's spotlighted as the number one character, but is then upstaged by the only woman in the movie who'll show her boobs. Ouch.

Adrian Pujol is Scott

Scott is Julies boyfriend, who is the school president. He spends the movie asking people what they have to do, then does whatever he's told to do. I heard his character was originally going to be named "Pussy", but they figured that was a little too obvious.

Summer Makovkin plays Julie Thurman (AKA, the reason 7th graders will want to rent this movie.)

The sex object of the film I guess. This gritty smoking, drinking, school newspaper writer is the "idea" person of the film, and the only one willing to show her breasts. She has a freakishly long next (see left) and a gross muscular back. I think it's kind of sad when the female lead has more muscles than the male lead.

Brooke Balderson is Cherry

Hey sis, can you do me a favor and be in my movie? You can get to act like a total bitch, so acting in this one won't be a total strain on your ability.

Amy Kelly is Terra Simpson

You really have to ask yourself if you should continue that role in acting when the reason you were probably picked for the role was because you were the only fucking person in Kansas that had an entire 50's wardrobe that didn't have a problem with varicose veins.

Eric Sherman is Lester "The Molester" Anderson

Ah ha ha ha ha, get it, they credit him at "The Molester" and his name is Lester! And he molests a girl in the movie! MAN THAT IS TOO FUNNY! WHOA!

Meghan McDonald is The original Suicide Girl

You know, when you look back at this first proto-type of the first Suicide Girl, I'm glad that with the advance in technology that they've manage to improve all future models of the Suicide Girls robots. Okay. Bad joke. Fuck off.
