Fucking Comics -The Incompetent Iron Man:

At the time of this writing Marvel Comics is just about to release their latest motion picture adapted from another one of their comic books: Iron Man.

For those of you at home who aren't familiar, in a nut shell Iron Man is a comic book that follows the adventures of millionaire inventor Tony Stark, who fights crime in a high tech suit of armor. Like many of the popular comic books being adapted into a motion picture, this one has it roots in the 1960's, and as such the original Iron Man tales are quite laughable compared to today's standards.

To give you a little background about the publication of this character: We go back to the early 60's when the comic book industry was making a come back with super-hero comic books, after nearly a decade of non-super-hero themed books (mostly romance, western, science fiction and horror comics, most of which had been tamed because of the advent of the Comic Book Authority Code of the 50's.)

At the time, Marvel Comics had a number of monthly titles that printed short sci-fi and horror stories. Among these titles was Amazing Fantasy, Tales to Astonish, Tales of Suspense, Strange Tales, and Journey into Mystery. Around the 60's when Marvel's own flag ship super-hero book, The Fantastic Four came around and was a success, Marvel decided it was best to err on the side of caution when it came to creating new super heroes and introduce characters in these other titles to see which characters would actually interest people enough to support his own series.

As such, Amazing Fantasy launched the start of Spider-Man, Tales to Astonish began running titles that featured Ant-Man, Strange Tales featured solo stories of the Human Torch, Journey into Mystery presented stories that featured Thor, and finally Tales of Suspense featured the stories of Iron Man.

Iron Man would end up becoming a regular monthly feature in Tales of Suspense for most of the 60's, the non-super-hero stories eventually being phased out and Iron Man sharing the title with the newly revived Captain America. Eventually after 100 issues, the Suspense title would be renamed to Captain America and feature full length stories about Cap. Iron Man however, having a storyline still up in the air would end up in a one shot Iron Man and the Sub-Mariner, who had also got turfed from his own shared title Tales to Astonish which was renamed to The Incredible Hulk. A month after this Iron Man would have his own title which endured in one form or another up into the present.

Now that we're done the history lesson, let's get on to the stuff I'm going to lampoon and make fun of shall we?

In this review, we're going to take a look at the first few Iron Man stories, poke some fun at them, and learn about my deep routed neurosis that makes me lash out at old comic books. Stick around won't you?
