Godzilla #9 Part 1: Godzilla, Mighty Marvel Style

In doing this review, I may have to take back my previous contention that Marvel Comics were comics written for smart people. In doing this review, I'm going to have to whole heartedly admit that Marvel comics can be just as retarded as DC comics. In fact, I may as well just stop jerking around and admit that, comic books are pretty retarded in general. Why do I say that? Well because today, I'm going to be reviewing one of the many issues of Marvel Comics short lived Godzilla comic book series. Like I sad in my Transformers comic review, Marvel comics was usually the place where comics based on commercial properties saw print back in the day. Pre-dating even Transformers, Marvel was printing out a comic book based on the popular Godzilla franchise.

The Godzilla comic book saw print back in 1977, when there was a big surge in popularity in North America with the Godzilla movies (I don't think Japan ever gets sick of that giant green monster, since they've pumped out 18 billion Godzilla movies)

Now, in most cases, when Marvel did a comic book based on someone else's property, they usually separated it from their own shit. Makes sense when you think about it. Why are you going to put their shit in your own? It makes it a bit of a bitch to reprint the stuff if you've got to pay out royalties to the other guys. But for whatever reasons (probably to get long time Marvel fans to pick up the book) some of these commercial properties were plunked smack dab in the middle of the ever lovin' Marvel Universe. Titles like Godzilla, Rom The Spaceknight, The Saga of Crystar and the first few issues of Transformers all were inter-mingled with the Marvel Universe. This soon stopped being a practice, because it became apparent that future legal issues with reprints, plus the effect on continuity could have a detrimental effect especially since they would have to "ignore" things when the rights ran out.

A perfect example of this (if anyone cares to follow along before I get back to talking about giant lizards again) is when Marvel went to reprint a number of their old issues of Marvel Two-In-One in one of their Essential trade paperbacks. Marvel Two-In-One was a on going series that would team up one Marvel character (usually the Thing of Fantastic Four fame) with another character. One particular issue of this series featured a team-up between the Thing, and a character named Doc Savage. Now Doc Savage is not a character owned by Marvel, however at the time of it's original publication they had the rights to print Doc Savage stories. When it came to reprint time, that wasn't the case, and at the last minute Marvel had to pull the issue from the reprint, and thus there is a one issue gap. Which doesn't look so good, because the issue that was pulled ended in a cliffhanger and was continued in the following issue.

Anyway, I got totally off topic, but I feel like I need to put some educational value in these things I write. But now, enough of that, let's get onto the part where I rant and rave and totally rip the fucking shit out of something that some asshole wrote over 30 years ago!

Yee-haw!

Okay, so as I said, Godzilla made his debute in Marvel comics back in 1977, the series ran for 24 issues before it was canned. Where Godzilla stands out over other comic series based on commercial properties (With the exception of Rom) was that supporting characters introduced in Godzilla's title made recurring appearances in other Marvel tales. Don't take my word for it, just look it up on Wikipedia for fucks sake.

Today, if it wasn't apparent already, we're going to be taking a look at the Godzilla comic that Marvel pumped out, specifically we're going to look at issue #9 of the series. It involves.. Well you'll see..
